The concept

In 2003, Nicoletta Boris, Gerardo de Luzenberger and Frank Little founded the School to help disseminate the culture of participative planning in Italy and to provide professional facilitators, moderators and others who are interested in this work with training and support for their work. The School offers high-quality professional training on methods, tools, procedures and techniques for working with groups.

The School

The School offers training programmes on a wide variety of methods, tools, procedures and techniques for workshops and participative planning.

Training is aimed at project managers, programme officers, trainers and their managers, and facilitators of workshops. It focuses on:
- promoting active dialogue and participation in organisations;
- stimulating approaches to learning organisations;
- developing high-quality projects and programmes;
- project and programme appraisal and evaluation;
- motivation and alignment of working groups and partnerships;
- productivity of meetings and working conferences;
- resolving conflicts in groups and partnerships.

The mission

The main goals of the School are:

- to be a point of reference for people who are involved in facilitation;
- to promote knowledge of a variety of different kinds of techniques and methods;
- to offer an integrated set of training events;
- to organise international events of reflection;
- to provide materials and publications on workshop facilitation;
- to undertake practical action research into participative planning.

Training events

A wide variety of different kinds of methods, tools and techniques are offered in our intensive courses. The training focuses on personal skill development. The trainers have extensive practical experience in the approaches presented.

Trainers from outside Italy work together with Italian staff to provide international experience, from Europe, the U.S.A. and elsewhere around the world.

The courses build on more than 20 years of experience in the training of facilitators in a variety of methods. We focus on:
- the needs of the individual in the training;
- small groups;
- highy practical and practice oriented;
- extensive use of simulations and case studies;
- high-quality training.

Strategic Partner

For our International training event on Open Space for meeting and conference organisers and facilitators in Utrecht, The Netherlands we have entered into a strategic partnership with the Merlien Institute. This independent organisation provides a unique platform to brainstorm new ideas and learn best practices in a highly interactive conference environment.
